Terrified of Love

The love of God undoes us.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love is sacrificial. Love is humble. Love is extravagant. Love is pure. Love never fails.

God is love. He is the verb (action) and the noun (embodiment).

Sadly, we are conditioned in this fallen world to mistrust the love of God because we've been hurt by the nature of human love. In the midst of our human condition, God invades our world with a message - more than that, a manifestation of love that is so pure, so rich, and so extravagant that we cannot comprehend it. It's too good to be true. It undoes us.

So, what we often do in our fear is transfer our human experience of love onto God. Since we have already experienced and accepted that love is imperfect and often conditional, we make a choice to believe this is the nature of God as well. In fact, it's easier to project or transfer our pain, fear, guilt, shame and inadequacies toward God than it is to trust him - this way we can have control. Trusting and believing God would mean embracing and giving grace, letting go of lies, forgiving, being humiliated, sacrificing, and all sorts of frightening things. It would mean being willing to be transformed and conformed to Christ, and frankly that is more frightening to many than the wrath of God (which is distorted by the enemy because God already placed his wrath on Jesus).

We are simply unprepared and unable to accept and receive pure love, even though it is our greatest need. The only way is through faith, which is also given to us by God. God is also mercy and we need mercy in order to receive his love through Christ Jesus.

Do you want love, True Love?
